The BFG
In Guided Reading and as part of their exciting new English unit, Year 3 are diving into the wonderful world of The BFG by Roald Dahl! The children have been thoroughly enjoying getting to know Sophie and the BFG and they have been captivated by Roald Dahl’s imaginative storytelling and wonderfully unusual language.
One of the children’s favourite parts of the story so far has been exploring and translating the BFG’s unique vocabulary. They have had great fun investigating words such as ‘gobblefunk’ and using clues from the text to work out what the BFG might mean. The children have also been making predictions about what could happen next, using evidence from the story to explain their ideas and justify their thinking.
We are using The BFG as inspiration for a range of exciting writing activities. The children have been developing their descriptive writing skills, thinking carefully about how to choose powerful vocabulary to describe characters, settings and events. We are also exploring similes and creating our own simile poetry, inspired by Roald Dahl’s creative and playful use of language.
It has been fantastic to see the children sharing their ideas, making thoughtful predictions and responding enthusiastically to the characters and events in the story. Here are some of their predictions and thoughts:
Milan predicts: “The other giants are going to try to eat the Queen.”
George thinks: “The evil giant is frightening and unkind.”
George thinks: “The BFG is kind because he protects Sophie.”
We are looking forward to seeing where the story takes us next and to reading some of the children’s creative writing inspired by The BFG!
