Hotel Flamingo

In Year 2, we have recently begun our Guided Reading sessions as most children have now completed the Read Write Inc scheme. This marks an exciting new stage in our reading journey, where children are moving from decoding texts to exploring deeper meaning, developing comprehension skills, and building confidence as independent readers.

Our current class novel is Hotel Flamingo by Alex Milway and we are thoroughly enjoying becoming familiar with the wonderful characters and the lively, heart-warming setting. The story has captured our imagination and sparked lots of thoughtful discussion about the challenges and adventures faced by the hotel’s staff and guests.

During Guided Reading lessons, we are working hard to develop a wide range of important reading skills. These include retrieval (finding key information in the text), inference (reading between the lines), prediction (thinking about what might happen next), and summarising (retelling the main ideas clearly and concisely). Alongside this, we are building our fluency using the whole-school FACE approach, helping us to read with Fluency, Accuracy, Confidence and Expression so that our reading sounds smooth and engaging.

It has been fantastic to see the enthusiasm and effort Year 2 are putting into their reading, as well as the growing confidence when discussing and sharing ideas about the text. Well done Year 2 — keep up the brilliant reading and keep enjoying your journey as confident, thoughtful readers!
