As part of our Black History Month learning, Year 4 have been exploring the powerful and thought-provoking poetry book The Undefeated by Kwame Alexander during our guided reading lessons.
This beautifully written and illustrated book celebrates the strength, resilience and achievements of Black people throughout history, while shining a light on the Civil Rights Movement in America. Through its powerful words and striking illustrations, the children have been encouraged to think deeply about the challenges faced by those who fought for equality and the incredible impact they made.
During our lessons, the children have been developing their comprehension skills by answering questions, exploring the meaning behind the language and discussing how the illustrations help to convey the book's important messages.
It has been wonderful to hear the children sharing their thoughts, asking thoughtful questions and reflecting on the importance of courage, determination and standing up for what is right. Through this powerful text, Year 4 are developing a deeper understanding of Black history and the importance of celebrating the voices and contributions of those who have helped shape our world.
